The word "溶洽" (róngqià, meaning harmonious or compatible) also appears in the book, such as in the analogy of white matter and our universe being harmonious and compatible, or being able to blend together.
The literal meaning of "溶洽" in the dictionary is: different things merging together. True fusion is not a rigid binding, but rather like blood dissolving in water, water dissolving in water, mutually accepting each other without abruptness.
The character "溶" (róng) contains the water radical. Its original meaning is related to the vastness of water; in modern times, it often indicates a substance dissolving in a liquid, with originally clear boundaries gradually disappearing. The character "洽" (qià) means coordination, harmony, and pervasiveness. "溶洽" is not just a simple mixing, but closer to: mutual entry, mutual penetration, and finally becoming a harmonious whole.
In life, many good principles cannot remain merely words, nor can they be piled together like a few stones.
A person knows the importance of honesty, the value of kindness, and the need for tolerance. However, in reality, when faced with a conflict of interest, they may still lie; when offended, they may still get angry; when wronged, they may immediately retaliate.
This illustrates that while the principles may be understood, they haven't truly become integrated into one's life.
True integration means that principles gradually permeate a person's thoughts, words, and actions:
When speaking, one naturally considers the truth; When acting, one naturally considers whether others will be harmed; When facing conflict, one naturally restrains emotions and introspects.
From a true perspective, integration clarifies the mind, eliminating falsehood.
Truth doesn't just require telling the truth; more importantly, it requires not deceiving oneself.
If impurities are mixed into water, the surface may remain calm, but the water quality has changed. The same is true of the human heart. A small lie, a hidden selfishness, or a deliberate attempt to cover up a mistake can all cloud the mind's clarity.
When truth gradually integrates into one's thoughts, one becomes increasingly open and honest. One dares to admit mistakes; one adheres to principles when facing interests; and one strives to maintain consistency whether alone or in public.
True harmony is the erasure of falsehood and pretense, allowing the essence of life to completely assimilate with the truth of the universe, achieving a pure state of "unity of mind and body, harmony between humanity and nature."
From the perspective of goodness: Harmony reduces conflict between different lives.
Goodness possesses a gentle power.
Water, seemingly weak, nourishes all things. A truly kind person is not necessarily weak. They are simply willing to think one step ahead for others, not easily harming them, nor suppressing them because of their own ability, status, or eloquence.
When goodness is harmonized in every particle of life, it becomes an instinctive compassion. This compassion is indiscriminate; it nourishes all lives connected by fate.
From the perspective of forbearance: Harmony prevents goodness from breaking down due to external stimuli.
Forbearance is not suppression, much less enduring harm without principle.
Forbearance is a capacity. Just as water can accommodate different components, when a person's heart expands, they will not be immediately controlled by anger when faced with misunderstandings, grievances, and temporary injustices.
Kindness without forbearance easily vanishes in the face of conflict; truth without forbearance can turn into sharp accusations. Forbearance allows truth and goodness to stabilize.
Forced forbearance leaves traces and easily collapses. Harmonious forbearance is a great compassion for all people. Ignorance, provocation, or harm from others, falling into this state, is like a clay ox entering a dead sea—instantly dissolved, embraced, and harmonized. And when faced with inhuman evil, this inclusive forbearance transforms into the purest force of order, completely eradicating it, because inhuman evil cannot stand in a state of pure harmony.
Having encountered the term "harmony" in an extremely valuable book, I will discuss its surface meaning and its personal inspiration here. For a deeper and more profound understanding, one must read the original text.
